Breakout & Retest

On Heikin-Ashi candles: a pause, the level it set, the candle that closed past it, and price coming back to it.

Examples taken from the live lists on 2 Oct 2026. Prices and rows change every hour; the steps do not.

What this tab finds

Breakout & Retest reads one stock at a time on Heikin-Ashi candles, the smoothed candles many traders switch on in TradingView. It looks for a simple picture: a stock was rising, it paused for a few red candles, and then a green candle closed above the top of that pause. That top is the breakout level. The tab lists the stocks where this happened recently, and then tells you what price has done with the level since.

  • The pause: red Heikin-Ashi candles (and dojis) after a run of green ones.
  • The level: the highest point of the pause's red candles.
  • The break: the first green candle whose Heikin-Ashi close is above the level.
  • After the break: did price come back to the level (a retest), or close back under it (back inside)?
  • Price now: where the live price is against the level, in per cent, right now.
  • Falls are the same picture upside down: green candles pausing a fall, the level is their bottom, a red candle closes under it.

There are seven candle sizes: 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 2 month, 3 month, 6 month and 1 year. A stock can have one row for a rise and one for a fall on each of them. Click the stock's name in any row to open the chart with the pause boxed, the level drawn and the break marked.

Example

COFORGE on 3-month candles, 2 Oct 2026

The row reads: pause of 6 candles from Apr–Jun 2025, level 1,759.0, the Oct–Dec 2026 candle (forming, 1 session of about 62) has a Heikin-Ashi close of 1,796.35, 2.1% above the level. Status: broke out. Price now: COFORGE closed 1 Oct at 1,826.00, which is +3.8% above 1,759.

Keep in mind. This is a finder, not a forecast. How often a break on these candles went on to hold has not been measured, so the tab prints no success rate and nothing here says a stock will go up or down.

Heikin-Ashi candles, and why the close is not the day's close

Heikin-Ashi (Japanese for 'average bar') candles are built from ordinary candles, oldest first. Each one mixes its own prices with the candle before it, so runs of green and red come out smoother and a pause is easy to see. The tab uses exactly the standard formula:

Heikin-Ashi valueHow it is worked out
Close(open + high + low + close) / 4 of the real candle - an average, not a traded price
Open(previous Heikin-Ashi open + previous Heikin-Ashi close) / 2. The very first candle uses (open + close) / 2
Highthe highest of the real high, the Heikin-Ashi open and the Heikin-Ashi close
Lowthe lowest of the real low, the Heikin-Ashi open and the Heikin-Ashi close
  • Green candle: Heikin-Ashi close above its Heikin-Ashi open.
  • Red candle: Heikin-Ashi close below its Heikin-Ashi open.
  • Doji: the body is less than 15% of the candle's full range (or the range is zero). A doji counts as neither green nor red for the rule.

Example

COFORGE's forming quarter, worked by hand

On 3-month candles the Jul–Sep 2026 Heikin-Ashi candle opened at 1,433.41 and closed at 1,650.70. So the Oct–Dec 2026 candle's Heikin-Ashi open is (1,433.41 + 1,650.70) / 2 = 1,542.05, and it is fixed for the whole quarter. Its Heikin-Ashi close after one session is 1,796.35 - the average of the quarter's real open, high, low and close so far. The real close on 1 Oct was 1,826.00. Two different numbers, both correct: one is an average, the other is the last trade.

Example

ITC on 1-year candles: the gap can be large

ITC's 2026 Heikin-Ashi candle (185 of about 246 sessions) has a close of 328.99. ITC's real price on 1 Oct was 255.90. The yearly Heikin-Ashi close still carries the high prices from earlier in the year, so on slow candles it can sit far from the real price.

Open it on the site →

Keep in mind. Every 'close' in the table except Price now is a Heikin-Ashi close. The level, the break close and the Newest close column are Heikin-Ashi values. Only the Price now column (and the price in the chart's header) is the real traded price.

The rule: pause, level, break

This is the owner's rule, read from his own TradingView chart of COFORGE on 3-month Heikin-Ashi candles. There are no extra checks and no score - the row is the break, its level, and what price has done with it since. For a rise:

  1. A trend candle is a green candle that is not a doji. The tab first finds a run of trend candles.
  2. A pause starts at the first red candle or doji after that run.
  3. The level is the highest Heikin-Ashi high of the pause's RED candles so far. A doji's wick does not set the level. Only if the pause is all dojis does the tab fall back to the dojis' high.
  4. A green candle inside the pause that does NOT close above the level does not end the pause. Later red candles join the same pause, and the level can only rise with them.
  5. The break is the first green (non-doji) candle whose Heikin-Ashi close is above the level.
  6. A pause lasts at most 12 candles. If nothing has closed above the level by then, that pause is dropped and the next green candle starts a fresh run.
  7. If a stock has several pauses that broke, the row is the newest one.

Example

COFORGE, 3-month candles, step by step

Apr–Jun 2025 was a doji (high 1,955): the pause starts there. Jul–Sep 2025 turned green but closed at 1,760, not above the doji high of 1,955 - the pause goes on. Oct–Dec 2025 was another doji whose wick reached 1,989.70; a doji's wick does not set the level. Jan–Mar 2026 was red with a high of 1,759.0 - now the level is 1,759. Apr–Jun 2026 was red too, high 1,554, so the level stays 1,759. Jul–Sep 2026 turned green but closed at 1,650.70, under 1,759: still the same pause. Oct–Dec 2026, forming since 1 Oct, has a Heikin-Ashi close of 1,796.35, above 1,759: that is the break. The pause is six candles long, Apr–Jun 2025 to Jul–Sep 2026.

Open it on the site →

Why the doji rule matters: if the Oct–Dec 2025 doji's wick at 1,990 had set the level, the break over the red candles' 1,759 would have been hidden. The level is where the sellers' red candles topped out.

Depth tells you how far the pause went against the trend: from the highest high of the run before the pause to the lowest Heikin-Ashi low inside the pause. COFORGE's run topped at a Heikin-Ashi high of 2,005.36 and the pause bottomed at 1,008.10, so the depth is 49.7%.

Tip. The forming candle counts. COFORGE's break is on a quarter that had traded one session. Its Heikin-Ashi open is fixed by the last closed quarter, so the cross is real as of the latest close - but the close moves every day and the break can disappear before the quarter ends.

Falls are the exact mirror. A trend candle is red, the pause is green candles and dojis, the level is the LOWEST Heikin-Ashi low of the pause's green candles, and the break is the first red candle whose Heikin-Ashi close is below it.

The statuses: broke out, retest, back inside

Every row carries one status, judged from the candles after the break, up to the newest candle (forming included).

StatusWhat happenedSmall line under it
broke out (Rises) / broke down (Falls)The break closed past the level and no later candle has come back to it or closed back across it.'holding across the level', or 'updates with each day's close' when the break is the forming candle
retest (or retest ×2, ×3 ...)After the break, price came back to the level at least once and the candle still closed on the right side. The ×2 is the number of separate visits. The candle(s) at the level, e.g. 'at the level since Jan–Mar 2026 · Apr–Jun 2026 · 1 candle ago'
back insideA candle's Heikin-Ashi close went back across the level the wrong way (under it for a rise, over it for a fall). This ends the follow-up.e.g. 'Sep 2026 closed under the level at 350.49'

What counts as a retest, exactly (a VISIT to the level):

  • The candle's REAL low (real high for a fall) comes back within 2% of the level. The real low is used because a Heikin-Ashi low is partly the previous candle's midpoint, not a traded price.
  • Its Heikin-Ashi close is still past the level. If it closed back across, it is 'back inside' instead.
  • Price must have been away first: either the break candle closed more than 2% clear of the level, or since the last visit a candle's low stayed outside the 2% band.
  • Candles that keep touching the level one after another are ONE visit, not one retest each.
  • A thin break (closed less than 2% past the level) is not followed by an instant retest: a candle that merely starts near the level is not a visit until price has been away.

Example

One visit, not four

HBLENGINE (Nifty 500) broke 641.95 on 3-month candles in Jul–Sep 2025. Jan–Mar 2026 came back to the level, and the quarters after it stayed near it. That is one return, so the row reads 'retest' with retest_n 1 and 'at the level since Jan–Mar 2026', newest Jul–Sep 2026.

Example

Retest ×2

AUBANK on 1-month candles broke 980.15 in May 2026 at 1,002.17. Price has come back to the level on two separate visits; the newest began in Sep 2026 and the forming Oct 2026 candle is still at it (Heikin-Ashi close 994.80). Status: retest ×2.

Example

Back inside

M&MFIN on 1-month candles broke 369.90 in Aug 2026 with a Heikin-Ashi close of 386.61. Sep 2026 closed back under it at 350.49. Status: back inside. The real price on 1 Oct was 319.75.

Open it on the site →

Keep in mind. A 'back inside' judged on the forming candle can undo itself before the candle closes. RELIANCE on 3-month candles reads back inside on Oct–Dec 2026 (Heikin-Ashi close 1,173.12 under the level 1,235.39) after one session; the quarter has about 61 more to go.

Price now: the retest you can act on today

When the owner says 'retest' he means: price is sitting AT the breakout level now, within 0.5% to 5% above or under it. That is the Price now control and column. It is a different question from the retest status, and the two are easy to mix up.

Broke 10,001.03 in Jul–Sep 2026 with a Heikin-Ashi close of 10,705.50 (+7.0%). The forming Oct–Dec 2026 candle came back to the level: status retest. Price now 10,045.00, which is +0.4% from the level - it shows in 'within 0.5%'. Both readings agree: price came back, and it is still there.

Example

Retest status, but far from the level now: BAJFINANCE, 3 month

Broke 783.00 in Jan–Mar 2025. Price sat at the level from Jan–Mar 2026 and the newest candle at it was Apr–Jun 2026: status 'retest', sub-line 'at the level since Jan–Mar 2026 · Apr–Jun 2026 · 1 candle ago'. But price now is 948.30, +21.1% above 783. The retest happened; it is not happening now. It does NOT show under Price now 'within 2%' or even 'within 5%'.

Open it on the site →

Example

No retest status, but at the level now: INDUSTOWER, 1 year

The 2026 yearly candle broke 383.45 with a Heikin-Ashi close of 408.59: status 'broke out', no retest. Yet the real price on 1 Oct was 376.25, which is -1.9% UNDER the level. The Heikin-Ashi close is an average of the whole year so far; the live price has already slipped under. Price now 'within 2%' finds it; Show = Retests does not.

Example

Neither: COFORGE, 3 month

Broke 1,759 on the forming Oct–Dec 2026 quarter, no retest yet, price now 1,826.00 = +3.8%. It passes 'within 4%' and 'within 5%', not 'within 3%' or tighter.

Open it on the site →

Reading the Price now cell: the big figure is the signed per cent (+ above, - under). The small line gives the live price and, when it is within 2% of the level, the words 'at the level' (the figure is highlighted). Example: '+0.4%' over '10,045.0 · at the level, 0.4% above'.

Tip. Price now does not care about the status. CHOLAFIN on 3-month candles is 'back inside' and its price, 1,580.00, is exactly on its level of 1,580 (0.0%). To see only stocks still holding the break, add Show = Retests or Show = Broke, holding.

Keep in mind. A stock with no live quote shows '—' in Price now and is left out whenever Price now is set to anything but 'anywhere', and sorts last under 'Nearest the level'.

When is about the row's NEWEST event - the break, the latest candle at the level, or the close back inside - not only the break. A stock that broke out two years ago but was back at its level this quarter counts as 'now'.

  • Now: the newest event is on the candle still forming.
  • Last closed candle: the newest event is on the last finished candle.
  • Last 5 candles: the forming candle plus the 4 closed before it.
  • Last 10 candles: the forming candle plus the 9 closed before it.
  • Newest: forming candle first; on the same candle, fresh breaks before retests before back-inside, then the bigger margin.
  • Nearest the level: smallest Price now first, above or under; stocks with no live price last.
  • Biggest margin: the break that closed furthest past its level first.
  • Most since the break: the biggest move from the break close to the newest Heikin-Ashi close, in the direction of the break.
  • Stock: A to Z.

Tip. Signed in, the Save scan button keeps the current set-up (tab, controls and column filters) as a named link.

If nothing passes, the page says so - for example 'No rise crossed a pause on the forming quarter on 3 month candles' - and suggests widening When or Price now, picking other candles, or clearing a column filter.

Column filters

Every column has a small box under its heading, like a spreadsheet's filter. The controls narrow the list first; each box then offers only what is left. Text columns (Stock, Break candle, Status) let you tick several values and have a Search box. Number columns take one preset cut at a time.

The address carries each filter as cf_<column>=<expression>. Text picks are written as '=' followed by the values, comma separated; numbers as a comparison or a range. You can type these into the address yourself:

  • cf_symbol=%3DCOFORGE (that is =COFORGE): only COFORGE.
  • cf_status=%3Dretest: only retests.
  • cf_now_pct=%3C0 (that is <0): price now under the level.
  • cf_now_pct=-1..1: price now within 1% either side.
  • cf_margin_pct=%3C1: thin breaks, less than 1% across.
  • cf_pause_n=%3E%3D3 (that is >=3): pauses of 3 candles or more.

Example

Thin breaks on 3-month candles

With Level → close set to 'under 1%' and When on Last 5 candles, five Nifty 200 rises were left on 2 Oct: AXISBANK (+0.64%), M&MFIN (+0.27%), HCLTECH (+0.23%), MOTHERSON (+0.66%) and POLYCAB (+0.09%). MOTHERSON broke 115.83 by only 0.66% in Jan–Mar 2026 and its newest Heikin-Ashi close is 158.62, about 36% since.

Tip. The Price now column filter and the Price now control do the same job; the column box adds 'above the level' and 'under the level', which the control does not have. A line above the table shows how many column filters are on, with a 'clear' link.

Candle sizes: 1 day to 1 year

The same stock on different candles is a different chart with its own pauses and its own levels. A break on the quarter says nothing about the month, and the other way round.

  • 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 2 month and 3 month are the site's own chart candles.
  • 6 month and 1 year are built (folded) from the monthly candles on calendar halves and years, the way TradingView draws them: first open, highest high, lowest low, last close.
  • The bucket the current month falls in is the forming candle, judged on its closed months plus the month so far.
  • A short part-period at the very start of a listing is skipped, so a pause is never read from a stock's first partial candle.

'Last 5' and 'Last 10' include the forming candle, so they reach back a long way on slow candles:

A decade on 1-year candles

On 1 year with Last 10 candles, BALRAMCHIN (Nifty 500) shows a break of 144.90 on the 2020 candle (5 candles ago, Heikin-Ashi close 155.04). With 2026 forming, the window runs 2017 to 2026. In the Nifty 200, 105 rises are listed on 1 year / Last 10.

Keep in mind. On 1 day there is no forming candle outside market hours: on 2 Oct (a holiday) 'Now' on 1 day listed nothing, because 1 Oct's candle was closed. Use 'Last closed candle' then. On 1 Oct, KOTAKBANK was the one Nifty 200 daily rise that broke out on the last closed candle (level 417.80, Heikin-Ashi close 424.00).

The chart that opens from a row

Click the stock name in any row. The site's chart opens in a popup, drawn on Heikin-Ashi candles at the row's own speed, with the break laid out on it. Everything general about this chart - crosshair, zoom, drawing, layers, speeds - is in the chart guide at /guide/chart. What is special on this tab:

  • The shaded box is the pause. It starts at the pause's first candle and ends at the candle before the break. Its top edge (bottom edge for a fall) is the level, drawn dashed and labelled 'Breakout level 1,759.0' (or 'Breakdown level').
  • An arrow under the break candle reads 'breakout over 1,759.0' (or 'breakdown under ...'), so you can see which candle crossed which line.
  • Every candle at the level since the break carries a 'retest <level>' mark. A candle that closed back across carries 'back inside'.
  • On any other speed there is no box and no arrows (the pause belongs to the row's own candles), but the level is still drawn across the chart as a price line named 'Breakout level' or 'Breakdown level'.
  • The Heikin-Ashi / Plain toggle switches the candles. On Plain, the box's far edge uses the real highs and lows; the level and the marks still come from the Heikin-Ashi reading.
  • The speed strip has the site's twelve speeds (15 min to 3 month) plus 6 month and 1 year, which the popup folds from the monthly chart exactly as the engine does. The row's own speed is marked. Those two folded speeds carry no trendlines.
  • The TradingView ↗ button opens the same stock on TradingView at the speed you are looking at (6 month opens as 6M, 1 year as 12M).

Beside the chart (under it on a phone) are two short panels:

When a row appears and when it leaves

  • One row per stock, per candle size, per direction. The same stock can have a Rises row and a Falls row: COFORGE on 1-week candles has a rise that broke 1,531.8 in the week of 27 Jul 2026 and a fall (of 1,668.3) that is back inside.
  • The row is the newest pause that broke. If a newer pause breaks later, the row moves to that newer break.
  • A row stays while its newest event - the break, the latest candle at the level, or the close back inside - is at most 10 closed candles old. Then it leaves.
  • The forming candle is re-judged on every run on its sessions so far. A break on it can appear and disappear from one day to the next.
  • A pause that runs past 12 candles without a break is dropped, so very old pauses do not hang on forever.

A retest keeps an old break on the list

COLPAL broke 1,724.10 on 3-month candles in Jul–Sep 2023, twelve quarters ago. It is still listed because the forming Oct–Dec 2026 candle came back to the level - a retest - which is a new event. Price now 1,735.00, +0.6%.

Falls, 3 month, Show 'Retests'. JUBLFOOD broke down under 459.95 in Apr–Jun 2026 (Heikin-Ashi close 443.30). From Jul–Sep 2026 price came back up toward the level, and the forming Oct–Dec candle is still at it; price now 443.40, 3.6% under the level. For a fall, a retest is the real HIGH coming back within 2% of the level while the Heikin-Ashi close stays under it.

7. See a 1-year level on the daily chart

Candles 1 year, When 'Last 10', Price now 'within 5%', Sort 'Nearest'. ITC is first: its 2021 red yearly candle topped at 255.46, 2022 broke it, and the forming 2026 candle came back to it (retest). Price now 255.90, +0.2%. Click ITC, then pick Daily (1D) in the speed strip: the daily candles are drawn with the line 'Breakout level 255.46' across them, so you can watch the yearly level on today's candles. Weekly and 15 min work the same way.

8. A stock you saw on TradingView: find it here, on the same chart type

Pick the candle size you were looking at, set When to 'Last 10 candles' so older events show, and type the symbol into the Stock column's Search box (or add cf_symbol=%3D followed by the symbol to the address). If the stock has no row, it has no qualifying pause and break on those candles in the window. Open it: the chart is already on Heikin-Ashi. Going the other way, the TradingView ↗ button opens the stock at the same speed; TradingView's link carries the symbol and the interval only, so switch the chart type to Heikin-Ashi there yourself.

9. Broke out, but price now is back under the level

Candles 1 year, When 'Last 10', Show 'Broke, holding', Price now column filter 'under the level'. One Nifty 200 stock: INDUSTOWER, broke 383.45 on the forming 2026 candle, real price 376.25 (-1.9%). The Heikin-Ashi close says broke out; the live price says it is under the line.

10. Two candle sizes agreeing

COFORGE's level of 1,759 shows on BOTH 2-month (break on the forming Sep–Oct 2026 candle, Heikin-Ashi close 1,880.62) and 3-month candles (forming Oct–Dec 2026). Check one size, then switch Candles to the other and use the Stock filter. The tab does not combine sizes for you.

What this tab does not tell you

  • Whether a break will hold, or whether a retest will bounce. Nothing here has been measured for success; the tab prints no success rate.
  • Whether a forming candle's break will survive. Its close moves every day until the candle ends.
  • The real closing price of a candle. Level, break close and Newest close are Heikin-Ashi averages.
  • Volume, trend strength, or any other check. The owner's rule has none: pause, level, break, and what came after.
  • Where to buy, sell, or put a stop. 'Wrong if' in the chart panel only says what would undo the reading on these candles; it is not advice.
  • Anything about other candle sizes. A monthly break is a monthly fact.
  • Stocks outside your stock list, or events older than 10 candles.

Keep in mind. The 2% retest band is per cent, not a volatility measure. 2% is a lot on a calm large-cap and very little on a volatile small-cap.

Read the rows as a short-list to open on the chart and judge for yourself.
